Beam Me Up Scotty!

Today I have been facing an emotional task—that of finally letting go of my model of the Starship Enterprise. Now, I can see the eyes rolling and the heads shaking from here! Don’t get me wrong—I am definitely a Star Trek fan, but the emotion actually comes from remembering how I acquired this particular model.

It’s been at least 20 years ago that my excited older children anxiously waited while I opened the Mother’s Day gift that they had purchased for me. To this day I feel fairly confident in saying that I’m probably the only mother who has received a Starship Enterprise for Mother’s Day! I can still vividly remember how delighted my children were to give me what they were certain was the perfect gift—and they were right! What could be more perfect than a gift that was chosen for you specifically because the giver was positive it would make you happy!

Each of them hovered around the table as the model took shape. I remember, too, all the confident advice on how to put it together, particularly from my oldest and very experienced model-building son, John. And although I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it, building it with my kids was one of the happiest moments of my life.

The model has occupied various places over the years. For awhile it sat on the entertainment center in the family room, a definite source of conversation. Later it “soared through the stars” connected to an elaborate harness of fishing line my husband created that hung from a plant hook in the corner of our bedroom ceiling. Eventually time took its toll. Its right nacelle suffered some of the same damage as its much larger counterpart in Episode 64, and since Scotty wasn’t available, I had to use my own personal engineer to make repairs (in other words, my husband and a tube of epoxy). The plastic has yellowed and some of it is missing. Even so, it still has the power to make me smile.

The children who gave it to me are now grown with children of their own and if I were to have one wish for them it would be that one day they will receive their very own “Enterprise” in whatever form it may take!

You know, perhaps I’ll keep it just a little longer! Beam me up Scotty! :-)

Okay, did the model receive damage because of some extra action in the bedroom? Obviously, a very romantic part of the atmosphere, eh? Just kidding. In all seriousness mom, I am thoroughly enjoying your blog. What were you thinking when you thought you wouldn't be able to find anything to write about :) Write on!

You know all the episodes by number? That's so weird!!!

As one of the givers, you have permission to chuck. If you ever get nostalgic, pop in the DVD. I think they used the exact same toy ship to film the show.

Seriously, I'm glad you've cherished it. It was given out of love.

Ok - I have to give a disclaimer here. I really don't know the episode numbers but it sounded good! :-)
