Today is Sunday and as part of the New Year, it seems appropriate to make a spiritual goal for this year. My 2008 goal was to read the Book of Mormon and I’m afraid I didn’t quite finish, making it half way through Helaman. Of course, I’ve decided to consider 2008 a “baker’s dozen” year with 13 months so I actually have until the end of January to finish! :-)
Today Ken spoke in Sacrament Meeting and helped introduce the Doctrine & Covenants, the course of study for this year. He gave a wonderful talk which encouraged me to set my goal for 2009—to read the Doctrine & Covenants.
He shared a quote that was so powerful I’d like to pass it on:
Neal
A. Maxwell – “It is vital to know that there really is a God, that there really is a Savior, Jesus Christ, that there really is impending immortality for all men, that there really will be judgment with personal accountability, and that there really is purpose in life and a plan of happiness for man. When we know such basic truths as these, then we know what really matters, how to approach life and how to view the universe. There is great power in perspective.”
He also shared one of my favorite testimonies from Joseph Smith of the Savior (D&C 76:22-24):
“And now, after the many testimonies which have been give of him, this is the testimony, last of all which we give of him: that he lives! For we saw him, even on the right hand of God; and we heard the voice bearing record that he is the Only Begotten of the Father—that by him, and through him, and of him, the worlds are and were created, and the inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God.”
These words never fail to stir my own testimony of the Savior. How grateful I am for that knowledge!
Anyway, if anyone else would like to read the D&C with me, we can get together when we're done and celebrate its completion!

Done. Although I don't think I'll be able to make a celebration party...unless you're willing to meet halfway.
I love Maxwell's quote.
I could be talked into meeting halfway!!!
